"To start with the house. It has the hallmarks of many glebe houses in Ireland with its central door flanked by two windows, pitched roof and surrounding trees: an image of good taste and modest comfort in a rural setting. But behind this façade is a house fit for a bishop. It was perhaps no coincidence, for Charles Warburton’s father was Bishop of Limerick when this house was built, living in the Bishop’s Palace that still stands on Henry Street in Limerick City.
How might a bishop live in the country? He would want a demesne; an estate with gate lodges and avenues, parkland, ranges of outbuildings including stables and coach houses, and a vast walled kitchen garden. Instead of taking on the existing glebe house close to the Church, Charles Warburton decided to build a new house on a new estate. He leased 30 acres from the Ballywilliam estate nearby; Daniel Maunsell in Ballywilliam House, would be his closest neighbour. Apart from the new glebe house, which faced what would become a substantial park fringed with trees, he built two gate lodges, stables for eight horses and coach houses for two carriages and he had an acre of a walled garden."
The current owner, born and raised in The Old Rectory wishes to extend "Cead Mile Failte"
